England continued on the path towards one of their worst ever World Cup campaigns with a humbling 229-run defeat to South Africa on Saturday gaming
As well as being England’s heaviest one-day international defeat by runs, it was their third in four games at this year’s tournament – one away from equalling an unwanted record gaming
They lost four out of six games in both 1996 and 2015 and here, the PA news agency looks at how the current tournament compares gaming

A bowling attack led by Darren Gough and Peter Martin, and with spinner Richard Illingworth sharing the new ball against Sri Lanka, struggled in the tournament and took their wickets at an average of 33 runs, which would remain England’s worst at a World Cup until 2011 gaming
Only four England batters passed 100 runs, including captain Michael Atherton who averaged 19 gaming

The 229-run margin against South Africa surpassed by over 100 England’s previous heaviest World Cup loss batting second, a 122-run defeat to the same opposition in 1999 gaming
Australia last year inflicted England’s then-record ODI defeat, by 221 runs gaming
Similarly, the nine-wicket loss to New Zealand has been surpassed only once, Sri Lanka chasing down 230 without losing a wicket in 2011, and matched twice more – by South Africa in 2007 and Sri Lanka in 2015 gaming
The Black Caps had 82 balls remaining, exceeded only by the Proteas among those games and by only three England World Cup losses ever gaming
England’s only other four-loss World Cup came in 2007, when they played nine games in a tournament featuring a ‘Super Eight’ stage gaming
They lost three in 1987, 1992, 2003, 2011 and on their way to the 2019 title gaming

Jakob Ingebrigtsen has accused his father and former coach of physical violence and abusive behaviour in a statement alongside his two brothers, Filip and Henrik – an accusation that their father strenuously denies gaming
Olympic 1,500m champion Jakob, the youngest of the three siblings, shot to fame when he stormed to gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 aged just 20 gaming
The Norwegian middle-distance runner has since gone on to win two World Championship silvers and two golds in 2022 and 2023 gaming
In 2022, Gjert Ingebrigtsen stepped down as coach of the three brothers for medical reasons gaming
However, the rift became increasingly public when Gjert began coaching fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas, who is a main rival of Jakob heading into next year’s Olympics having won bronze at the World Championships in August gaming
Now, in an article for the publication VG, the brothers have gone public with historical claims of physical abuse about their father, suggesting “now the situation is unbearable gaming

“This matter has become so inflamed and has had such a great consequence that we feel a responsibility to clean it up gaming
“We have grown up with a father who has been very aggressive and controlling and who has used physical violence and threats as part of his upbringing gaming
We still feel discomfort and fear which has been in us since childhood gaming
“Somehow we have accepted this gaming
We have lived with it, and in adulthood we have moved on gaming

In retrospect, we realise that it was naive gaming

The three brothers and their father had a very public relationship as the stars of a Norwegian reality TV show, Team Ingebrigtsen, but the trio now say they don’t have the “capacity or desire” to interact with him gaming

In a statement released by his lawyers, Gjert has strenuously denied the claims, saying: “The statements they make are baseless gaming
I have never used violence against my children gaming
That I have had weaknesses as a father, and to a great extent been a coach, is a realization I have also come to – albeit far too late gaming
“I’m far from perfect as a father and husband, but I’m not violent gaming
First and foremost, this is a tragic situation for my family – we have reached the point where we are spreading false accusations against each other in the media gaming
It makes me deeply unhappy gaming
