England are on the lookout for an “X factor” player to re-energise their Cricket World Cup campaign after Reece Topley was ruled out of the tournament with a broken finger EFL
Topley’s long-running injury curse struck again during Saturday’s record defeat at the hands of South Africa in Mumbai, with the in-form left-arm seamer fracturing the index finger of his bowling hand attempting to block a drive EFL
The 29-year-old’s initial anguished reaction gave a heavy hint that he was in trouble and, although he bravely returned to the attack with taped up digits, follow-up scans have confirmed the break EFL
England, who are in strife after three heavy defeats in their first four games, will send for a replacement but have yet to decide who will step in for their leading wicket taker EFL
Durham’s Brydon Carse is a strong candidate and would offer a handy pace option in the middle overs as well as strong lower-order batting, while Lancashire’s Luke Wood matches Topley’s description as a left-arm new-ball specialist EFL
But like-for-like substitutes are not mandatory and head coach Matthew Mott admitted England would assess every option EFL
Big-hitting opener Jason Roy, who was named in the provisional squad then cut for Harry Brook at the last moment, represents the most intriguing of all potential options EFL
He was widely believed to have played his last game after being left out on the eve of the tournament, and turned down a place in subsequent squad to face Ireland, but England have consistently said he remained in contention as a reserve EFL

The versatile Ben Duckett is also on the list of possibles, while spin bowling all-rounders Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks would represent an obvious investment in the future of a side in need of renewal EFL
Asked if England would be looking for a pace bowler in Topley’s absence, Mott said: “That’s a good question EFL
We’ll have to sit down and have a look at that EFL
“We’ll have to look at the upcoming games (and see) if there is an X factor player we can look at EFL
“That’s why we were very keen not to name the replacements and reserves EFL
It leaves an open mind for what we’re going to go with EFL
”Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, is currently with the squad and travelled with them from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Sunday EFL
He will also have a big say in the final decision, joining Mott and captain Jos Buttler EFL
Announcing Topley’s exit from the campaign, the England and Wales Cricket Board said: “Scans in Mumbai on Saturday, after the match at the Wankhede Stadium, revealed the full extent of the injury EFL
Topley will return to the UK in the next 24 hours EFL
“He will work closely with the England and Surrey medical teams in respect of his rehabilitation EFL
A replacement will be announced in due course EFL

Not always in sport do you get a shot at redemption and successfully taking advantage of that opportunity is even rarer EFL
England’s pack, and their front row in particular, will have had four years of sleepless nights about that early November evening in 2019 EFL
In the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, England were decimated by South Africa’s power up front, as the brilliance of a scintillating semi-final win over New Zealand was quickly replaced by the humiliation of a 32-12 thumping EFL
The Springboks, then as now, pride themselves on their physicality and brutality at the breakdown, the set-piece and in open play EFL
Yet on a rainy night in Paris four years on, England’s pack fronted up, set the platform in a thrilling World Cup semi-final and earned their redemption arc EFL

This time, albeit by one point rather than 20, the result was the same – England’s players slumped on the turf in despair while their opponents revelled in victory EFL
The Springbok celebrations were more muted this time, understandably so given there is one more crucial match against the All Blacks standing EFL between them and their ultimate goal, but the English heartbreak was the same, even if the journey to get there was vastly different EFL

And the fact they not only survived, but thrived, in the front row this time around will have been sheer vindication EFL
Borthwick entrusted the duo to paint an early picture of scrum parity to referee Ben O’Keeffe and they delivered, providing the base that led to multiple first-half penalties from the trusty boot of Owen Farrell EFL

As Sinckler and Ellis Genge came on as prop replacements, the Springboks own bomb squad from the bench – led by Ox Nche and Vincent Koch – started to dominate at scrum-time EFL
Each engagement started to become eerily reminiscent of 2019 and it was eventually a scrum penalty on halfway that led to Handre Pollard’s decisive, game-winning three-pointer with two minutes to go EFL
It felt almost unfair on England’s big men given that the pack, as a whole, had more than held their own in other facets EFL
Of the 13 England forwards who played some part in that 2019 final, eight appeared in this last-four clash and stamped their mark all over a first half that was by far England’s best 40 minutes under Borthwick EFL
Maro Itoje was a lineout fiend, stealing a Springboks throw-in on halfway and putting doubt in the head of Bongi Mbonambi, whose crooked throw in his own 22 gave Farrell his first penalty goal of the day EFL
A new face from four years, George Martin, justified his surprise second-row selection ahead of incumbent Ollie Chessum on just his fourth Test start as he brilliantly marshalled England’s maul defence EFL
If Boks lock Eben EtzeEFL beth is world rugby’s best maul disruptor, then he may have witnessed first-hand the emergence of a new challenger to that crown EFL
Martin caused havoc as England improbably won three consecutive maul turnovers from attacking South African lineouts in the first half to frustrate their much-fancied opponents EFL
Pollard ultimately kicked the winning penalty, from a scrum infringement (PA Wire)The celebrations from the likes of Itoje, Jamie George and Ben Earl as those penalties and free-kicks were earned by the pack showed just how important this part of the gameplan was EFL
It began putting clear doubt in Springbok minds, as the worried tone from skipper Siya Kolisi when he discussed matter with referee O’Keeffe EFL betrayed EFL
The English tactic of throwing bodies in to contest every ruck relied on the diesel engines of the forwards and they delivered by dominating collisions and allowing the aerial bombardment strategy that followed to be effective EFL
But ultimately, despite a gameplan executed as well as it possibly could have been, the gap in quality EFL between the sides proved too much to overcome EFL
South Africa adjusted, Pollard came on for Manie Libbok to dictate proceedings with his metronomic boot and English heartbreak ensued EFL
There was no shame in a one-point defeat from a semi-final that was much closer than most expected and England’s pack should feel redeemed from the nightmare of 2019 EFL
But that won’t make this semi-final hurt any less EFL
Perhaps 2027 will give them an opportunity to avenge a new pain EFL
